Letter No. 51 {Kyle Steed]

Hello Friend,

I recently discovered a new artist on Instagram named Kyle Steed. He makes large, abstract pieces and murals and I think his work is absolutely beautiful. His work inspired me to make a few new pieces myself, and there is one piece of his I particularly love, which is the one below:

Steed created this piece for Passenger Coffee and it’s titled, “I See You, You See Me” (click the photo to go to his website and see more photographs of this piece/other work).

So I got to work creating something. Gouache is the closest thing I have to acrylic paint right now, so I used gouache on mixed media paper and ended up with this piece:

I started off with a pencil sketch of the basic outline, but then I chose colors as I went along.

The next day, I made another piece. This one felt slightly more constrained to me, and so I wasn’t sure if I liked it at first. The color scheme also completely changed from what it initially started out as, which I thought was interesting (and which I like. I was not liking the colors I chose at first).

Morning Majesty

I drew an outline again and started filling in the spaces with paint. The painting was smaller and more detailed than the first, so I had to switch brushes and took more care to be neater.

The finished piece:

Here’s to finding new artists and being inspired by them! :)
